(Cleveland) - It only took a few days for U.S. Marshals to make an arrest in a nearly 20-year-old cold case rape. DNA matched 49-year-old Elias Acevedo to an attack on June 6, 1993, at West 7th and Quigley.
According to the indictment issued last Friday, the victim went with a man she knew to go looking for her boyfriend. She reported that the man then strangled her until she was unconscious and raped her twice in a field.
Acevedo was indicted just three days before the statute of limitations expired.
The U.S. Marshals’ Northeast Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force located Acevedo Tuesday morning in the 2300 block of Seymour Avenue in Cleveland. Marshal Peter Elliot says he was arrested without incident and is now in jail.
Elliott says as the DNA testing technology gets better, more and more of these cold cases will be solved. He says there are cases on file going back more than 40 years.
