(Cleveland) - A 12-year-old male has died after being shot by cleveland Police. The Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team is currently investigating the shooting which took place Saturday afternoon.
At around 3:30 pm a call to 9-1-1 was received about a male waving a gun in the air and pointing it at others at a playground outside the Cudell Recreation Center on Cleveland's westside. The caller advised dispatch the that suspect was likely a minor and he didn't know if the gun was "real or not."
When responding officers arrived, they located the suspect and told him to raise his hands. The suspect did not raise his hands, instead reaching into his waistband for the gun. Officers then fired shots, striking the suspect in the abdomen.
The suspect was transported to Metro Health Medical Center via EMS for surgery. His condition deteriorated through the overnight, passing away Sunday morning.
Investigation revealed that the gun was an Airsoft BB gun with the orange safety cap removed, giving it an appearance similar to a semi-automatic pistol.
One officer was transported to Fairview Hospital for an ankle injury. Both responding officers have been placed on administrative leave.
