A Somber Anniversary in Chardon

A Somber Anniversary in Chardon

(CHARDON)-Heather Ziska was just feet away from T.J. Lane when he opened fire in the Chardon High School cafeteria two years ago today.

She says she heard strange popping sounds in the hallway and then saw the gunman shoot.

Ziska tells WTAM she and others then immediately ran outside still not believing what was going on inside. She says she thought they'd get in trouble for leaving school.

Now two years removed and in college, Ziska says she's grown a lot over the years and has realized that anything can be turned around.

She says volunteering to coordinate events like the vigil at Chardon High School today have helped her heal.

She also thanks the Chardon community for embracing the students and victims and helping share the burden of grief.

Three students were killed and three wounded.

T.J. Lane is serving a life sentence.
