Akron school board votes to fire Spondike

(Akron) — The Akron school board has voted to fire a teacher who they say made some Facebook posts that were racist and derogatory.

The Akron board voted Monday night to fire music teacher David Spondike. The board put the Firestone High School teacher on paid leave while it proceeds with terminating his contract.

The process could take months if the 15-year veteran teacher decides to fight the decision.

Administrators say Spondike posted racial slurs and derogatory comments on his Facebook page after witnessing teenagers urinating near his front yard in Copley Township.

The teacher initially refuted the allegations in a series of You Tube videos. He later acknowledged posting the comments, saying he was within his rights to speak his mind.
