Prosecutor Tim McGinty announces heroin crackdown

(Cleveland) - Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty is announcing a major crackdown on drug violations related to heroin.

He says police are now targeting not only the major players in the heroin trade, but also low level dealers, middlemen, and casual participants, especially in cases involving fatalities.

County Sheriff Frank Bova says his office will be working closely with suburban law enforcement to carry out the crackdown. County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson reports that heroin use is exploding in the suburbs, and is showing no sign of decreasing.

The county is also starting a TV ad campaign to warn the public of the dangers of heroin. $160,000 is being spent to run a series of advertisements on the local television, and on the internet.

McGinty says in Cuyahoga County, heroin takes more lives than suicide, fire, and traffic crashes combined.
